The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has issued a stern warning to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) regarding its proposed shutdown of telecommunication services scheduled for 1st March. The NLC’s action is in response to a recent 50 percent tariff increase imposed by telecom providers. The NSCDC expressed concerns that the planned protest could pose significant threats to national security and public safety.
In a statement released by NSCDC spokesman, CSC. Babawale Afolabi, the Corps confirmed that operatives have been deployed to protect telecommunications infrastructure and prevent any illegal activities during the protests. Afolabi emphasized the importance of dialogue in resolving disputes and reiterated the agency’s readiness to take firm action against any breaches of the law during the planned demonstrations.
The NLC had earlier called for a boycott of major telecom providers, urging citizens to limit their use of telecom services daily between 11 AM and 2 PM throughout February if the tariff hike is not reversed. However, the NSCDC has urged caution, stressing that such actions could have far-reaching consequences for national stability.

Meanwhile, stakeholders within the telecommunications sector, including the Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, have criticized the NLC’s planned protest. They argue that the tariff increase is necessary to prevent the collapse of the industry, particularly in light of rising operational costs following the removal of fuel subsidies.
As tensions rise, the NSCDC remains on high alert, ensuring the protection of critical infrastructure and maintaining public order. The Corps has called on all parties to prioritize peaceful dialogue to resolve the ongoing dispute.
