Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi is awake and recovering after being placed in an induced coma following emergency abdominal surgery. The Nottingham Forest forward suffered the injury during Sunday’s Premier League match against Leicester City when he collided with the goalpost while chasing a cross from teammate Anthony Elanga.
Despite initially continuing to play, the 27-year-old was later substituted and rushed to hospital on Monday after his condition deteriorated. Forest confirmed the successful completion of Wednesday’s “potentially life-saving” operation, with Awoniyi now conscious and surrounded by family.
The incident has reignited debate about player safety protocols and the controversial delayed offside flag rule, as Elanga was in an offside position during the play leading to Awoniyi’s injury. The club also defended owner Evangelos Marinakis against criticism for his post-match pitch invasion, describing his actions as demonstrating “deep care” for the player rather than confrontation.
Awoniyi’s recovery timeline remains uncertain, with the club emphasizing the episode serves as a stark reminder of football’s physical dangers. The former Union Berlin striker has become a key player for Forest since his £17 million transfer in 2022, scoring 15 Premier League goals for the Midlands club.
