The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has extended its free medical mission in Bayelsa State by one week, following a massive turnout of patients at the General Hospital Otuasega in Ogbia Local Government Area.
The mission, which began on May 12, has already seen 3,000 patients and performed 133 surgeries, including cesarean procedures and cataract extractions.
The NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, announced the extension, citing the huge demand for medical services in the area.
He noted that the mission is part of the Commission’s efforts to provide healthcare services to medically underserved rural communities in the Niger Delta region.
The NDDC has promised to upgrade the Otuasega Cottage Hospital with modern facilities and to conduct the free medical mission quarterly, rather than yearly.
NDDC Director of Education, Health, and Social Services Dr. George Uzonwanne said the free medical mission is being conducted in partnership with Cecy Health Consult and is also taking place at the Auchi General Hospital in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.
According to him, over two million Niger Deltans have benefited from similar medical missions in the past. The Commission has also partnered with State Governments and Development Agencies to equip hospitals and provide necessary manpower in rural areas.
The Chief Medical Director of Bayelsa State, Dr. Doubra Doukumo, commended the NDDC for bringing the free medical program to Otuasega, describing the turnout as unprecedented.
The NDDC’s efforts are in line with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to achieve universal health coverage and ensure health and well-being for all.
