NARD Declares 7-Day Nationwide Strike Over Abducted Doctor

Date:

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced a 7-day nationwide warning strike across all its centres, starting at midnight on Monday, August 26, 2024.

The strike is in response to the ongoing captivity of one of its members, Dr Ganiyat Popoola, who has been held hostage for over eight months.

NARD President, Dr. Dele Abdullahi, disclosed in a statement that the strike was made during an Emergency National Executive Council meeting held virtually on Sunday, August 25, 2024.

The strike will be total, with no emergency services provided during this period.

Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna, was abducted along with her husband and nephew nearly eight months ago. While her husband was released in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity.

In recent weeks, NARD members have protested at tertiary hospitals across the country, demanding the immediate release of Dr Popoola.

The strike is the latest effort by the Association to put pressure on authorities to secure her freedom.
