The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning regarding the illegal sale and distribution of an unregistered brand of condoms, Foula condoms, found in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, and Zango, Katsina State.
NAFDAC stated on Thursday that the unapproved condoms are packaged in threes and lack English labeling, highlighting that the product has not undergone safety, quality, or efficacy assessments.
The agency noted that condoms serve as an effective dual-purpose barrier for preventing unintended pregnancies and protecting against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, provided they meet regulatory standards and are used correctly.
NAFDAC expressed concerns that low-quality condoms compromise public health efforts, as they may be prone to leaks or breakages, rendering them ineffective.
In response, NAFDAC has directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to carry out surveillance and remove the unregistered products from circulation.
NAFDAC also advised healthcare providers, consumers, importers, distributors, and retailers to obtain condoms and other medical devices from authorized suppliers and report any suspected cases of unregistered products via its hotlines, email, or the Med-Safety app available on Android and iOS platforms.
