Minimum Wage Debate: FG Proposes N62,000 Amidst Controversy

Date:

The federal government has stated that the N62,000 monthly minimum wage offer recommended by the Tripartite Committee set up by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu considers the national interest and current economic realities.

Minister of National Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, and Chairman of the 37-man Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage, Alhaji Bukar Aji, made these remarks in Abuja.

However, Organized Labour has rejected the Committee’s recommendation, insisting on N250,000 as the acceptable national minimum wage.

State Governors, represented by the Nigeria Governors Forum, have also rejected the N60,000 proposed minimum wage, warning that compelling States to pay this amount could result in a 40% reduction in the workforce.

They disclosed that only 10 subnational governments could afford the new salary structure.
