The Mexican government has announced plans to take legal action against Google if the tech giant proceeds with renaming the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” for users in the United States. President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed that Mexico has sent another letter to Google, arguing that the executive order issued by former U.S. President Donald Trump on the issue only applies to the U.S. portion of the continental shelf.
In the letter, the Mexican government clearly stated that it does not accept the renaming of any geographic area that includes part of its national territory and jurisdiction. President Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico will defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Google, part of the tech giant Alphabet, clarified that users in Mexico would continue to see “Gulf of Mexico” on their maps, while users in other countries would see both names. However, Apple has already renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” for U.S. users to comply with Trump’s executive order.
The dispute highlights the complexities of international boundaries and the influence of tech companies on geographic naming conventions. Mexico’s stance underscores its commitment to preserving its territorial identity.
