Bayer Leverkusen have signed English centre-back Jarell Quansah from Premier League champions Liverpool, in what is now the most expensive signing in the German club’s history.
The 22-year-old defender joins the Bundesliga side for a reported fee of up to €40 million, including €10 million in performance-related add-ons. The deal also includes a €60 million buy-back clause in favour of Liverpool, which becomes active from the summer of 2027.
“We are very happy to be able to sign Jarell Quansah, one of the most promising English central defenders,” said Leverkusen’s managing director of sport Simon Rolfes. “He made a very impressive contribution to a Liverpool defence full of world-class players. Jarell will give our defence extra dynamism, tempo and strength.”
Quansah, a product of Liverpool’s academy since the age of five, made his senior debut in 2023 and went on to make 58 appearances for the club. During his time at Anfield, he won two League Cups (2022, 2024) and was part of the squad that secured the 2024/25 Premier League title.
After largely serving as backup to Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté, Quansah heads to Leverkusen to fill the void left by former captain Jonathan Tah, who recently departed the club.
Speaking on his move, Quansah said: “The ambitious targets here were clearly explained to me during the negotiations. It’s a great role and challenge for me to be part of the current Leverkusen rebuild.”
Leverkusen, who made Bundesliga history by going undefeated in their 2023/24 title-winning campaign, finished 13 points behind Bayern Munich last season. The club has since embarked on a squad reshaping, with Quansah’s arrival following the departures of Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong to Liverpool.
