Northern Elders Forum requests Tinubu lift the embargo on the Niger Republic

Date:

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which is headed by Tinubu, imposed penalties including electricity cuts and border closures after democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum was removed from office on July 26.
The decision to send military personnel on standby to the Niger Republic was decided during the emergency ECOWAS summit on Thursday.
Ango Abdullahi, the NEF’s convener, voiced concern over the use of force to restore constitutional order in the Niger Republic and said it was unlikely to succeed.
He highlighted that lifting the sanctions would make it easier to hold conversations and he pleaded for diplomacy to win out.
According to Abdullahi, Nigeria should halt all sanctions and other coercive measures used against the Niger government and people. This will make it simpler for Nigeria to lead negotiations that utilize all of the resources that both nations appreciate. There should be no use of force against Niger.
In addition, the NEF convener urged Tinubu and the people of both Nigeria and the Niger Republic to maintain their long-standing ties.
“We urge President Tinubu to recognize this unique moment in history and conduct himself in a manner that records his role as a defining statesmanship,” Abdullahi said in his statement. We implore the people of Nigeria and Niger, along with our leaders, to thwart any efforts to taint our long-standing partnership.
