Labour Party Faction Gives Peter Obi 48-Hour Ultimatum to Resign Over Coalition Alliance

Date:

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to former presidential candidate Peter Obi, demanding that he resign from the party over his involvement with the newly formed opposition coalition led by David Mark and operating under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform.

In a statement released on Thursday, spokesperson for the group, Obiora Ifoh, criticised Obi’s association with the coalition, accusing him of engaging in double political loyalty while still identifying with the Labour Party.

“We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party. We’re also aware that a number of them have refused to defect with him,” Ifoh stated.

He added that the Labour Party would not accept any member who participates in the coalition, warning that such individuals must formally resign their LP membership within 48 hours.

“Labour Party has consistently said it is not part of the coalition and therefore, any of our members who is part of the coalition is given within 48 hours to formally resign his membership of the party.

“Labour Party is not available for people with dual agenda, people with deceptive persona. The party will not avail itself to individuals who have one leg in one party and another leg elsewhere,” the statement read.

Ifoh further described members of the coalition as politicians with a history of mismanaging Nigeria and driven by desperation rather than genuine reform.

“Desperate politicians can’t birth a new Nigeria,” he said, emphasising that the Labour Party remains committed to distinct and principled leadership, separate from what he called “opportunistic politicians interested in relaunching themselves into the circle of power.”

The ultimatum marks a deepening internal rift within the party and raises questions about the political direction of Obi, whose alignment with the coalition has sparked speculation about his future ambitions.
