In a thrilling Round of 16 encounter at the FIFA Under 20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia, reigning vice-champions Japan narrowly defeated Nigeria two-one on Friday morning, bringing an end to the Falconets’ impressive campaign.
Japan took the lead in the 33rd minute with a goal from Miyu Matsunaga. Maya Hijikata extended Japan’s advantage in the 66th minute.
Despite a late goal from Nigeria’s Olushola Shobowale, who scored a composed finish one minute into stoppage time amid heavy rain in Bogotá, the Falconets fell short.
Japan will now face Spain in the quarter-finals, renewing their rivalry from the final match of the previous tournament in Costa Rica two years ago.
