The Director General of the National Senior Citizens Centre, Dr. Emem Omokaro, has underscored the importance of addressing the positive contributions and challenges faced by older persons, particularly in combating ageism. Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, ahead of the International Day of Older Persons, Dr. Omokaro emphasized the need to confront stereotypes that hinder older Nigerians from accessing essential healthcare, social services, and lifelong learning opportunities.
The International Day of Older Persons celebrated globally on October 1st, raises awareness of the opportunities and challenges experienced by the aging population while encouraging communities to take action. However, in Nigeria, the event is observed on October 5th due to Independence Day celebrations.
Dr. Omokaro expressed concern over the discrimination faced by older citizens in the country, noting that such stereotypes often restrict their ability to live full, healthy lives. In response, the National Senior Citizens Centre plans to honor individuals and organizations dedicated to breaking these barriers by presenting them with special awards.
The commemoration, which runs from September 30th to October 5th, will engage the media to support its goals and promote a greater public understanding of healthy aging. The initiative will also spotlight age-friendly services and involve media and entertainment veterans as Goodwill Ambassadors for the center, advocating for the rights and inclusion of older persons in society.
