Minister of Interior, Mr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has called for the implementation of comprehensive individual and corporate identity management systems as a key strategy in Nigeria’s battle against terrorism financing.
Speaking at the opening of a three-day National Training Workshop on Counter-Terrorism Financing in Abuja, Mr. Tunji-Ojo highlighted the critical role identity management plays in combating financial crimes linked to terrorism. He noted that terrorism financing often involves illegal trade, arms smuggling, currency trafficking, and drug-related activities, making robust identity systems essential for monitoring and controlling these networks.
The Minister emphasized that a hybrid approach is necessary to effectively address the ideological and financial challenges posed by terrorism.
Ms. Hafsat Bakari, Director of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, and Mr. Kodjo Attiso, representing the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, pledged their support for initiatives designed to curb terrorism financing in the country.
Mr. Jeffrey Isima, representing the Director General of the Inter-Governmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa, stressed the importance of tackling terrorist financing in the region, noting that such efforts are vital for saving lives.
