The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified that it has not finalized its decision regarding the delineation of wards in Warri North, Warri South, and Warri South West Federal Constituency, despite circulating reports suggesting otherwise. The commission described such claims as misleading and urged stakeholders to avoid actions that could disrupt peace in the region.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, stated that the commission has been engaged in extensive consultations since the Supreme Court’s December 2022 ruling mandated the review. These consultations, which began in February 2023 and continued through July 2024, involved fieldwork across communities in the three local government areas, culminating in a draft report.
Last Friday, INEC met with stakeholders in Warri to present the draft report, allowing parties to raise concerns before finalizing the delineation. Olumekun emphasized that the commission remains committed to fairness, equity, and the rule of law, and will continue engaging with all stakeholders before making a final decision.
INEC has called on representatives to submit their observations on the draft report to guide further discussions. The commission also appealed for calm, urging stakeholders to refrain from actions that could undermine peace and security in the constituency.
