The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate allegations surrounding the Standard Organisation of Nigeria’s (SON) reversal of its decision to shut down 18 companies involved in the production and distribution of substandard building materials, particularly manufacturers of iron rods.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Billy Osawaru, a lawmaker from Edo State. Hon. Osawaru expressed concern over the recurring incidents of building collapses in Nigeria, which he attributed to the use of substandard products, poor regulatory practices, and inadequate construction processes.
The House resolved to probe SON’s actions and make recommendations on how to address the widespread issue of substandard building materials in the country. The investigation aims to ensure stricter regulatory oversight and prevent further tragedies caused by the use of inferior construction materials.
This move underscores the House’s commitment to safeguarding public safety and holding regulatory agencies accountable for enforcing quality standards in the construction industry.
