The House of Representatives has established an ad hoc committee to investigate the recent violent unrest in Osun State, which erupted on February 17, 2025. Lawmakers also called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security heads to take immediate action to restore peace and order in the state.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, following an amendment proposed by Hon. Isiaka Ibrahim, emphasized that the committee would conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the violence and submit a detailed report to the House.
Hon. Bamidele Salam, who led the motion, expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions, warning that the situation could worsen if not swiftly addressed. He noted that the violence had already claimed six lives, with many others sustaining injuries and receiving treatment in hospitals.
The motion of urgent public importance, sponsored by nine representatives from Osun State, was triggered by the violent clashes that ensued after officials who had been removed by a court ruling in November 2022 attempted to regain control of local governments. This development led to widespread unrest, prompting the House to intervene.
House to Investigate NAFDAC Operations in Drug Markets
In a separate resolution, the House of Representatives also directed an investigation into the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) over concerns regarding its operations in drug markets across the country.
The motion, raised by Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, highlighted complaints from traders and stakeholders in the pharmaceutical sector regarding the impact of NAFDAC’s regulatory actions on legitimate businesses. Lawmakers emphasized that while effective drug regulation is necessary, it should not unfairly disrupt the livelihoods of innocent traders.
Following deliberations, the House mandated its Committee on NAFDAC to conduct a detailed inquiry, ensuring that regulatory enforcement does not adversely affect law-abiding businesses while still maintaining public health and safety standards.
Both committees are expected to submit their findings to the House for further legislative action.
