House of Representatives Directs NCC to Block Pornographic Websites

Date:

In a decisive move to address the proliferation of obscene content online, the House of Representatives has called on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to mandate Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block websites hosting pornographic material. The lawmakers also urged the NCC to enforce the Nigerian Communications Act and the National Information Technology Development Act against ISPs that fail to comply.

The resolution followed a motion by Hon. Dalhatu Tafoki, a lawmaker from Katsina State, who highlighted the growing global issue of cyber pornography and the lack of concrete measures to curb it in Nigeria. Hon. Tafoki emphasized the harmful effects of such content, including deception in marriage, promotion of adultery and prostitution, unrealistic expectations, and the encouragement of promiscuous behavior and addiction.

“The unchecked spread of pornographic content online poses a significant threat to our societal values and the well-being of our youth. It is imperative that we take immediate action to protect our citizens from these harmful influences.”

Bill to Protect Human Rights Defenders Advances

In a related development, a bill aimed at recognizing and protecting human rights defenders in Nigeria passed its second reading in the House of Representatives. Sponsored by Hon. Abiola Makinde and Hon. Mudasiru Lukman, the bill seeks to strengthen the government’s capacity to safeguard individuals and organizations advocating for human rights.

Leading the debate, Hon. Makinde stressed the importance of creating a legal framework to protect human rights defenders from harassment, intimidation, and violence. The bill has garnered widespread support among lawmakers, who recognize its potential to promote accountability and justice in Nigeria.

A Step Toward a Safer Digital and Social Environment

The House’s directive to the NCC underscores its commitment to fostering a safer digital environment for Nigerians, particularly the youth, who are most vulnerable to the negative effects of explicit online content. Meanwhile, the advancement of the human rights defenders’ bill reflects the legislature’s dedication to upholding fundamental freedoms and protecting those who champion them.
