The House of Representatives has called on MultiChoice, the digital satellite provider and owner of DStv and GOtv, to suspend its recent subscription rate hike. The move comes two weeks after Nigerians were shocked by a 20-25% increase in the subscription fees for MultiChoice’s pay-TV services.
The company attributed the price hike to rising operational costs driven by economic factors. However, the decision sparked widespread public outrage and has since become a major topic of debate in the House of Representatives.
During a recent session, Hon. Esosa Iyawe, a member representing Edo State, raised an urgent motion seeking to halt the price increase. Iyawe also called for a probe into MultiChoice’s alleged arbitrary pricing practices, emphasizing the need to protect consumers from unfair pricing.
The House has urged MultiChoice to reconsider its decision and engage in dialogue with stakeholders to address the concerns of its subscribers.
