Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been charged with leading a plot to overturn his 2022 election loss. Prosecutor General Paulo Gonet accused Bolsonaro and his running mate, General Walter Braga Netto, of heading a criminal organization aimed at undermining Brazil’s democracy.
A total of 34 people, including senior military officials, were charged in the case, which follows a two-year investigation into Bolsonaro’s role in the election-denying movement that sparked riots in Brasília in early 2023.
Bolsonaro has denied any wrongdoing, dismissing the allegations as a political witch hunt. However, analysts suggest that his arrest is unlikely unless the Supreme Court deems him a flight risk.
The charges mark a significant moment in Brazil’s political landscape, highlighting the ongoing tensions and legal battles surrounding the 2022 election.
