First Lady Tinubu Urges National Action Against Tuberculosis, Pledges N1 Billion Support

Date:

Abuja, Nigeria – The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for urgent nationwide efforts to combat tuberculosis (TB), declaring the disease a public health emergency requiring immediate intervention.

Speaking at the 2025 World TB Day Community Outreach in Sauka Village, Abuja, the First Lady emphasized the need for collective action to eliminate TB by 2030. She stressed the importance of strengthening community-based healthcare systems to ensure early detection and treatment, particularly among vulnerable populations.

Senator Tinubu urged all stakeholders—including government agencies, traditional and religious leaders, lawmakers, healthcare workers, private sector organizations, NGOs, and international partners—to unite in the fight against the disease.

Citing the World Health Organization’s 2024 Global TB Report, she highlighted the alarming spread of the disease and reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding free testing and treatment centers nationwide.

Demonstrating her commitment to the cause, the First Lady announced a N1 billion donation from the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) to support TB eradication programs across Nigeria. The funds will enhance access to healthcare services, public awareness campaigns, and medical resources in high-risk communities.

“Tuberculosis is a preventable and treatable disease, yet it remains a major health threat,” she said. “We must act now to save lives and ensure a healthier future for all Nigerians.”
