FIFA to Review Proposal for 64-Team World Cup in 2030

Date:

World football governing body FIFA has announced that it will review a proposal to expand the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams, in celebration of the centenary of the sport’s premier event.

The 2030 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, with Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay—where the inaugural tournament was held—set to host three matches.

Next year’s World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada will already see the tournament expanded from 32 to 48 teams. Reports suggest that FIFA’s decision on the 2030 expansion will be influenced not only by sporting considerations but also by financial and political factors.
