Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government has assured National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members that they will receive backlog payments of their increased monthly allowance, following months of delayed implementation.
In September 2024, the government approved a raise in corps members’ monthly stipend from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000. However, the new rate has yet to take effect, sparking widespread concern among serving and recently discharged participants.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, confirmed that both current and past corps members—who served when the increment was announced—will receive the arrears.
“The backlog will be paid. It may not be immediate, but it will happen,” Olawande stated during a recent television interview. He referenced the NYSC Director-General’s assurance that all affected members’ details have been documented for processing.
The delay in implementing the revised allowance has drawn criticism, with many corps members expressing frustration over financial constraints. The government’s latest commitment offers hope for thousands awaiting the long-promised adjustment.
