The federal government is taking significant steps to cushion the impact of petrol subsidy removal by commissioning a new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Plant in Lagos.
The 5.2 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) CNG Plant was inaugurated in the Isolo Industrial Area, Ilasamaja, Lagos, yesterday.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo emphasized the importance of this development under the theme, From Gas to Prosperity: CNG For All.
Minister Ekpo highlighted the global use of CNG as a clean and efficient transport fuel, noting its lower CO2 emissions compared to gasoline-powered vehicles.
Meanwhile, NNPC Limited’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mallam Mele Kyari, announced plans for six more CNG Stations across Nigeria. This is part of NNPC’s commitment to enhancing energy security and accessibility.
Kyari stated that the new CNG station in Ilasamaja is a significant step in growing domestic gas supply and utilization, in line with the Petroleum Industry Act’s mandate for NNPC to promote domestic gas use.
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and his Ogun State Counterpart, Mr. Dapo Abiodun represented by the Commissioner of Environment Mr. Ola Oresanya, both commended the project, highlighting the efforts of the State in capacity building for CNG conversion to promote economic development.
The NNPC CNG Station in Ilasamaja, built in partnership with NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NGML) and Transit Gas Nigeria Limited (Axxela Company), is capable of serving vehicles and supplying gas to industries.
According to the Presidential CNG Initiative Chief Executive, Engineer Michael Oluwagbemi, it can fill about 3,700 cars or 600 trucks/buses daily, ensuring a constant CNG supply.
