Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation has launched a water quality analysis in response to a cholera outbreak that has claimed the lives of at least thirty people across multiple states.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Aliyu Shinkafi, told newsmen the measure was necessary following continued reports of an outbreak in many parts of the country.
He emphasized the Ministry’s concern regarding the seriousness of the waterborne disease, urging Nigerians to safeguard themselves and their families by boiling or treating drinking water before consumption.
He also appealed to all Nigerians to maintain regular handwashing with soap under clean, running water, particularly before eating and after using the toilet as he assured that the Ministry, in collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), would continue to provide updates as the situation progresses.
The ten states that recorded 90 percent of the cases are Bayelsa with over 400 cases, Lagos, Abia, Cross River, Delta, and Imo.
Others are Katsina, Nasarawa, and Zamfara.
