The Federal Government has announced concrete plans to deliver 75,000 electricity meters by April 2025, followed by an additional 200,000 units in May, as part of its comprehensive strategy to address Nigeria’s 7 million metering gap. Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu confirmed the rollout through his media adviser Bolaji Tunji, revealing that these installations form part of broader initiatives to transform the country’s power sector.
Current data shows 5.5 million (55%) of Nigeria’s 10.1 million registered electricity customers now have meters, with 572,050 installations completed last year. The government is implementing two major programs to accelerate progress: the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP) targeting 3.2 million meter deployments by 2026, and the N700 billion Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) designed to install 2 million meters annually for five years.
Minister Adelabu emphasized that these structured interventions demonstrate the administration’s commitment to resolving the metering challenge within a defined timeframe, countering speculation that the gap might take decades to close. The initiatives incorporate multiple procurement models, including international competitive bidding, with the first PMI tender expected in Q3 2025.
