The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has vowed to address unpaid salaries owed to resident doctors before their three-day warning strike ends, as medical personnel down tools over months of unpaid wages.
Strike Action Amid Broken Promises
Members of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in the FCT began a three-day industrial action Monday, protesting delayed salaries that have left many struggling financially. Despite the strike, emergency services continue as doctors uphold their ethical obligations.
Government’s Response
Mandate Secretary for Health Services, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, acknowledged the doctors’ grievances during the handover of WHO-donated utility vehicles aimed at improving emergency response.
“We are working round the clock to ensure salaries are paid before the ultimatum expires,” Fasawe said. “We appreciate their professionalism in maintaining emergency care despite the strike.”
Broader Implications
The strike highlights systemic challenges in FCT’s health sector, with the WHO’s intervention underscoring gaps in infrastructure. Doctors warn of a full-blown strike if their demands remain unmet after the three-day period.
