Tension is rising in Biseni Community in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State following an explosion on the Kalama pipeline operated by the former Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), now managed by African Renaissance Energy Limited.
The explosion occurred at about 7 p.m. on Sunday amid ongoing protests by women in the community, triggering fear and panic among residents.
The affected facility is a major pipeline that transports crude oil from Biseni Community to the Adibawa Flow Station in Rivers State.
The explosion reportedly occurred within a residential area of the community.
Speaking on the incident, the Youth Leader of Biseni Community, Aye Preye, said the cause of the explosion has yet to be ascertained. He explained that residents heard a loud explosion on Sunday evening, causing many people to flee for safety.
According to him, the loud noise was followed by a huge inferno that lit up the sky.
Preye added that African Renaissance Energy Limited has shut down the Kalama oil well to prevent the fire from spreading and causing further damage.
