Eight individuals have been arrested following violent protests by supporters of Dutch club, Ajax against a police strike that led to the postponement of their weekend match.
Hundreds of fervent Ajax supporters gathered on Sunday afternoon in Amsterdam after Acting Mayor Marjolein Moorman, on the advice of the police, ordered the postponement of the Dutch league match against Utrecht.
During the protests, fireworks were ignited, police vehicles and bicycles were damaged, and a group of fans vandalized the city’s police headquarters. The unrest prompted officers in riot gear to arrest eight individuals.
The unrest follows a police union’s announcement from a month ago that they would be withholding coverage for selected Dutch league matches as part of their campaign for an early retirement scheme.
