Over the past year, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has intensified its fight against financial misconduct, prosecuting seven high-profile figures and reclaiming vast assets, signaling a renewed commitment to anti-corruption.
EFCC Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Uwujaren Wilson, highlighted these achievements at a recent conference on the one-year milestone of Chairman Ola Olukoyede, who took office on October 18, 2023. Under Mr. Olukoyede’s leadership, the commission has prosecuted four former governors and three former ministers on corruption charges and has secured over 3,000 convictions for various financial crimes.
Mr. Wilson reported that EFCC’s asset recoveries now total over ₦248 billion, along with substantial foreign currency sums. He credited a specialized task force aimed at curbing currency abuse with achieving more than 35 convictions in the past year. Additionally, international collaboration with agencies such as the FBI has bolstered Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts.
Committed to prevention as well as prosecution, the EFCC has launched youth-centered educational initiatives to promote ethical standards and prevent financial crimes. New departments and ongoing reforms aim to further streamline operations, reinforcing the EFCC’s position as a decisive force against corruption in Nigeria.
