The Federal Government has challenged public universities to diversify their funding sources and reduce dependence on government allocations.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made the call at the National Advancement Forum in Abuja, where he stressed the need for universities to strengthen their financial sustainability.
Alausa says only four of Nigeria’s 68 federal universities are making meaningful use of alternative funding sources such as research grants, endowments, alumni contributions and partnerships with industry.
He says the government’s ambition to make Nigerian universities globally competitive will require improved facilities, stronger research capacity, modern laboratories and greater opportunities for students.
The Minister has therefore directed universities to strengthen their Advancement Offices and take greater responsibility for mobilising resources beyond government funding.
Stakeholders at the forum also examined practical approaches already being adopted by universities, as well as challenges affecting efforts to attract alternative funding.
The initiative is aimed at helping Nigerian universities transition from over-reliance on public funding towards sustainable resource mobilisation and long-term institutional development.
