Former senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing what he described as the party’s “lack of potency and capacity” to address Nigeria’s mounting political challenges.
Melaye announced his departure on Thursday via his official X handle, where he shared a signed resignation letter addressed to the PDP chairman of Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State. The letter, dated July 4, 2025, signified his immediate withdrawal from the party and all its activities.
“The decision became imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation,” Melaye wrote.
The former PDP governorship candidate in Kogi State added that after extensive reflection, he could no longer, in good conscience, continue his association with the party.
He also expressed gratitude for the platform the PDP offered him during his political career.
Melaye’s exit is the latest in a series of high-profile resignations from the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections. Earlier in July, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also quit the party, citing irreconcilable internal differences and a departure from the PDP’s foundational ideals.
These defections underscore the growing realignments within Nigeria’s political landscape as major players reposition ahead of the next electoral cycle.
