Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has affirmed that all coalition leaders within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will support whoever emerges as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Amaechi, a two-term former governor of Rivers State, said the group is committed to a unified front, regardless of who wins the party’s ticket.
“The moment anybody emerges from the primary, all of us will support — that’s the agreement,” he declared. “We insist on a free and fair, transparent primary.”
Amaechi, who recently left the All Progressives Congress (APC), also expressed concern over the worsening economic conditions in the country, citing widespread hunger and hardship. He urged Rivers State indigenes to join the ADC and work to oust the APC in the upcoming polls.
“Every Rivers man who thinks good of the state and country should move to register with the new party and ensure that we remove the current government and stop the hunger that everybody is suffering from,” he said.
The ADC was recently adopted as the platform for a major opposition coalition seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid. The coalition includes several prominent political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, both of whom were major contenders in the 2023 presidential race.
Other key figures in the alliance include former Senate President David Mark, who now serves as interim chairman of the coalition, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
During the coalition’s unveiling on July 2, Mark described the movement as an urgent intervention to protect Nigeria’s democracy and prevent a drift toward a one-party system.
