Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reaffirmed his commitment to protecting Canada’s sovereignty, following recent comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state. Speaking ahead of his meeting with King Charles on Monday, PM Trudeau emphasized that nothing is more important to Canadians than standing up for their sovereignty and independence as a nation.
“Canada is a proud and independent country, and we will continue to defend our sovereignty and values on the global stage,” Trudeau stated during a media briefing.
The meeting with King Charles, who serves as Canada’s head of state, is expected to focus on issues of national interest, including Canada’s role in international affairs and its commitment to global stability.
President Trump has repeatedly made remarks implying that Canada would benefit from becoming part of the United States, a notion that Trudeau has strongly dismissed. The Canadian Prime Minister’s firm stance reflects the country’s determination to maintain its independence and unique identity.
During the briefing, Trudeau was also asked about Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. He responded by reaffirming his support for Ukraine, stating, “I stand with Zelenskiy,” and highlighting Canada’s ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine in its efforts to defend its sovereignty.
As Trudeau nears the end of his tenure as Prime Minister, his strong stance on Canadian sovereignty signals a continued effort to assert the country’s independence and leadership on the global stage.
