President of the Cameroon Football Federation, Samuel Eto’o, has been cleared of match-fixing allegations due to insufficient evidence.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) disclosed this in a statement.
Eto’o had faced charges of alleged manipulation of football matches and violating the principles of ethics and integrity.
CAF stated that after a thorough examination of the evidence, it found insufficient proof to convict Eto’o and businessman Mr. Valentin Nkwain of match manipulation.
However, Eto’o was found guilty of violating CAF’s ethical principles by becoming a brand ambassador for a betting company and receiving payment, resulting in a fine of two hundred thousand dollars.
Eto’o assumed the presidency of the Cameroonian Football Federation in December 2021, following a highly successful playing career in which he won two Africa Cup of Nations titles with his country, three UEFA Champions League trophies, and several league titles in Spain and Italy.
The 43-year-old was facing a potential life ban from football if found guilty.
