A dramatic scene unfolded at the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex on Wednesday when Governor Siminalayi Fubara arrived to meet with lawmakers, only to find the entrance gates locked.
According to reports, security personnel at the complex locked the gates upon the arrival of the governor’s convoy, citing the absence of official communication between the governor and the Assembly.
Governor Fubara, however, stated that he had communicated his visit to Speaker Martins Amaewhule through a formal letter and had also attempted to reach him via phone since Tuesday.
The governor’s visit comes amid ongoing efforts to implement the February 28, 2025, judgment of the apex court, which directed the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to conduct fresh local government elections. The commission has since scheduled the polls for August 9, 2025.
In a related development, the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, had earlier sent a letter dated March 7, 2025, requesting a meeting with the lawmakers on March 10, 2025. The meeting was intended to discuss the re-presentation of the 2025 budget and initiate peace talks.
The incident highlights the ongoing tensions between the executive and legislative arms of government in Rivers State.
