Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick has lost his bid for re-election to the FIFA Council. The election took place during the 14th Confederation of African Football (CAF) Extraordinary General Assembly on Wednesday in Cairo, Egypt.
Pinnick secured 28 votes but fell just one vote short of the required number to secure one of the two available slots. Mauritania’s Ahmed Yahya and Djibouti’s Souleiman Waberi emerged victorious, claiming the final positions on the FIFA Council.
Pinnick, who was first elected to the FIFA Council in March 2021 during CAF’s 43rd Ordinary General Assembly in Rabat, Morocco, was the third Nigerian to hold a seat on the prestigious council, following in the footsteps of Oyo Orok Oyo and Amos Adamu.
His loss marks the end of his tenure on the FIFA Council, a role in which he represented Nigeria and contributed to the development of football on the global stage.
