Bill Establishing Akwa Ibom State Merit Awards Scheme Progresses

A Bill for a law establishing the Akwa Ibom State Merit Awards Scheme 2024, has scaled Second Reading at the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.

The Bill sponsored by the Member representing the Ikono State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Asuquo Udo was first read in August 2023.

Rt. Hon. Udo while explaining the provisions of the bill highlighted that the scheme if assented will reward various Akwa Ibom citizens or organizations that have contributed to the outstanding growth of the state, home, and abroad.

The Lawmaker further stressed that the bill will House the creation of an Award Council that will handle the selection of awardees and coordinate events that will see to the rewarding of illustrious sons and daughters of the state.

The bill gained prominence as the majority of the House spoke on the benefit of the bill hinting at the gains of putting the State on the global map.

After votes were gathered, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong committed the Bill to the House Committee on Inter-Governmental, Political, and Special Matters to conduct a Public Hearing and report back to the House in one month.

The Bill if passed into Law will feature an individual merit award, industry award, and political award.
