Prominent leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Senate President David Mark, have urged Nigerians to join a broad coalition aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
The call was made on Tuesday during a closed-door meeting in Abuja, where top PDP figures gathered to assess the current state of the party and the nation. In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the leaders called on all PDP members and Nigerians to unite around a shared vision rooted in national unity, democratic principles, security, economic recovery, and an uncompromising stance against corruption.
They emphasized the urgent need for strategic planning, noting that future coalition efforts must be grounded in both national and local political realities.
The PDP leaders also expressed concern about the party’s post-2023 electoral decline and internal instability, citing the resignation of former national chairman Iyorchia Ayu as a major turning point. They blamed the current challenges on internal divisions and disregard for the party’s constitution, which they said have led to a loss of direction and credibility.
The APC-led Federal Government, they alleged, is undermining democracy by using state institutions to intimidate the opposition, while the country continues to suffer from economic hardship, rising insecurity, and a decline in public trust in governance.
The communiqué further lamented that several PDP-elected officials have defected to the ruling party due to political pressure and patronage, thereby weakening the party’s structure.
The meeting concluded with a call for immediate efforts to rebuild the PDP, restore stability, and strengthen leadership ahead of 2027.
Other notable attendees included former governors Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), former PDP national chairman Uche Secondus, among others.
This gathering adds to the series of high-level consultations across political divides as the opposition intensifies coalition efforts ahead of the next election cycle. Prominent figures such as Peter Obi (Labour Party), Nasir El-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi are reportedly involved in the ongoing talks aimed at forming a formidable alliance against the ruling APC.
