APC’s Monday Okpebholo Declared Winner of Edo Governorship Election

Date:

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Monday Okpebholo, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the Edo State gubernatorial election held on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

Okpebholo emerged victorious after securing 291,667 votes, defeating his closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,274 votes. Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) finished third with 22,763 votes.

Announcing the results on Sunday, INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Faruq Adamu Kuta, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, said Okpebholo won in 11 of the 18 local government areas of the state.

“I, Prof. Faruq Adamu Kuta, certify that I am the Returning Officer for the Edo State governorship election held on September 21, 2024. Monday Okpebholo of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” Kuta announced.

The election, which had a total of 17 candidates (16 men and one woman), saw voters across 4,519 polling units in the state turn out to elect a successor to Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Before the official results were declared, PDP candidate Asue Ighodalo expressed concerns about the conduct of the election, calling it “the worst in Nigeria’s history” due to alleged discrepancies in over 20 polling units. Governor Godwin Obaseki also visited the INEC collation center early Sunday morning, accompanied by Deputy Inspector General of Police Frank Mba, to seek clarification on reports that PDP agents were excluded from the collation process.

Despite these concerns, INEC has upheld the results, confirming Monday Okpebholo as the governor-elect of Edo State.
