Amnesty International has called on the Federal Government to cease threatening individuals and groups who voice criticism of the current administration. This appeal follows reports of alleged intimidation targeting National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member Ushie Uguamaye, who faced pressure after posting a viral TikTok video expressing frustration over Nigeria’s economic hardship under President Bola Tinubu’s government.
In a statement posted on its X (formerly Twitter) account, the human rights organization condemned the reported actions by NYSC officials, who allegedly pressured Uguamaye to delete the video. Amnesty International emphasized that Uguamaye was well within her rights to express her concerns, particularly given the worsening economic conditions affecting millions of Nigerians.
The organization also highlighted the dire economic situation in the country, noting that government policies have pushed many citizens into extreme poverty with little hope of recovery. Amnesty International urged the government to respect freedom of expression and address the root causes of economic hardship rather than silencing dissenting voices.
This incident has sparked widespread concern about the shrinking space for free speech in Nigeria, with many calling for accountability and transparency in governance.
