Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace, Dr. Allen Onyema, has called for President Bola Tinubu’s intervention over the five per cent Ticket Sales Charge imposed on Nigerian airlines.
Onyema says the current system, which requires airlines to pay five per cent of the cost of each ticket to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, is placing additional financial pressure on domestic operators.
Speaking at the 30th Annual Conference of the League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents in Lagos, Onyema advocated replacing the percentage-based charge with a fixed amount attached to each ticket.
He says such a system could ease the financial burden on airlines while protecting the interests of aviation agencies and passengers.
Onyema, who is also Vice President of the Airline Operators of Nigeria, expressed confidence that President Tinubu would intervene if presented with the challenges facing domestic carriers.
He recalled the President’s earlier decision to exempt airlines from a four per cent Free on Board levy introduced by the Nigeria Customs Service, following concerns about its impact on the industry.
The Air Peace Chairman also raised concerns about multiple taxes and charges imposed on domestic operators, saying they are affecting the competitiveness and long-term survival of Nigerian airlines.
He called for a tax and charges framework that would support airline growth while ensuring sustainable revenue for government and aviation agencies.
