The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the commencement of direct flights between Abuja and Algiers effective April 6, 2025, marking a new chapter in bilateral relations between both nations. Air Algérie will operate the route using Boeing 737 aircraft under the Bilateral Air Services Agreement.
Acting Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa described the development as “a significant milestone” that will enhance diplomatic and economic cooperation. The inaugural flight will transport Nigerian embassy officials, community leaders in Algeria, and Algerian government representatives.
Beyond strengthening ties between both countries, the new route offers multiple benefits:
- Reduced travel time between West and North Africa
- Increased tourism and trade opportunities
- Affordable connection option to Europe via Algeria
- Enhanced Nigeria’s position as regional transportation hub
The Federal Government has pledged full operational support for the route, while encouraging businesses and travelers to utilize the new air link for expanded trade and cultural exchanges. This development comes as both nations seek deeper economic integration within Africa.
Air Algérie becomes the first North African carrier to establish direct flights to Nigeria’s capital, potentially paving way for similar connections with other African nations. Aviation analysts suggest the route could significantly boost business travel between both oil-producing nations while creating new tourism circuits.
