Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Endorses 2022 Independent Electoral Commission Amendment Bill

Date:

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed the 2022 Independent Electoral Commission Amendment Bill of the State into Law.

The Bill was passed on Thursday after the House received a report from the Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs following a Public Hearing which was held on April 16, 2024.

Chairman of the Committee and Member representing Etim Ekpo/Ika Constituency, Hon. Mfun Idung while presenting the reports highlighted some observations and recommendations discussed during the Stakeholders meeting.

The House thereafter resorted to ‘Committee on the whole’ where the sorting of amendments was acknowledged prompting the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong to pass the Bill in favor of the House.

As part of its Amendments, the Bill contains a 3-year term for Local Government Executive and the creation of a Local Government Election Petition Tribunal.

The House was further adjourned to reconvene on April 30, 2024
