Akwa Ibom Assembly Holds Public Hearing On Amendment Of State Electoral Laws

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has pledged to collaborate in amending the independent electoral laws of the State to ensure that local government elections are held every three years.

Speaker of the House who was represented by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon Kufre Edidem gave the assurance during a Public Hearing organized for possible amendment of the Independent Electoral Laws of the state.

The Speaker noted that the House is ready to partner with the state government by enacting laws that will foster growth and development, especially within the local government areas of the state.

On their part, the Chairman of Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission, Elder Aniedi Ikoiwak pledged the Commission’s readiness to carry out local government elections while the State’s Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ini Ememobong appreciated the House for its swift response.

On the sidelines, Representatives from Civil Society Organisations in the State gave their suggestions on the properties of the bill while lauding the state government for the initiative.

It would be recalled that a bill to amend the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Law scaled 2nd reading at the Assembly on April 11, 2024.
