Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged Nigerians and political leaders to look beyond the 2027 elections and focus on how the mandate produced by the polls will be used to secure the country’s future.
Sanwo-Olu spoke at the seventh annual lecture of Freedom Online in Lagos, which brought together political leaders, media practitioners and other stakeholders to discuss the theme, “2027 Elections: Economy, Security and Nigeria’s Future.”
He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure adequate preparations for credible elections and also stressed the need to address insecurity and create more jobs.
Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, called for responsible journalism ahead of the elections, warning against fake news, sensationalism and inflammatory reporting.
Mohammed urged the media to focus public discussions on policies, competence and solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.
Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, also highlighted the connection between security and economic growth, calling for greater investment in jobs, skills, technology and access to capital, particularly for young Nigerians.
PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State, Ladi Adebutu, called for stronger institutions and transparent elections, while Freedom Online publisher, Gabriel Akinadewo, advocated the establishment of state police and the modernisation of Nigeria’s laws.
