Nigeria and the International Energy Agency, IEA, have signed an agreement for a Joint Work Programme aimed at strengthening cooperation on energy policy, investment and energy security.

Vice President Kashim Shettima says the agreement follows Nigeria’s formal admission into the IEA as an Association Country, describing the development as a significant milestone and a reflection of the country’s growing role in the global energy sector.

Speaking on behalf of President Bola Tinubu at the signing, Shettima said the partnership will allow Nigeria to benefit from the IEA’s expertise, institutional knowledge and technical resources as the country develops its energy sector.

He said Nigeria will continue to work with international partners towards a fair and just energy transition while taking advantage of its renewable and other energy resources to support economic growth.

Leader of the IEA delegation, Dr. Fatih Birol, said Nigeria was unanimously accepted following consultations and consideration by the organisation’s member governments.

Birol said the IEA will support Nigeria with policy advice, data, expertise and training in areas ranging from clean cooking and gas markets to other emerging energy technologies.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Gas, Ekperikpe Ekpo, said the Joint Work Programme will involve IEA technical experts working with Nigeria to develop data for energy policy and investment across the value chain.

Officials say the partnership is expected to strengthen energy planning, attract investment and support Nigeria’s long-term energy security and economic development.
