ActionAid Nigeria, in collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Movement for the Transformation of Nigeria (MOTION), has organised a youth-focused civic engagement festival, “Turn Up for Democracy Fiesta,” to encourage youth participation in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The event, held in Abuja, featured on-site voter registration and Permanent Voter Card (PVC) resolution services alongside entertainment and a funfair. Coming as the two-week extension of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise nears its end, the festival provided eligible citizens with an opportunity to register as first-time voters, transfer their polling units, or replace lost or damaged PVCs.
INEC FCT Administrative Secretary, Abimbola Oladunjoye, commended ActionAid Nigeria for initiating the partnership, noting that the programme was specifically designed to encourage more young people to register and participate in future elections.
ActionAid Nigeria Country Director, Andrew Mamedu, said the initiative is a pilot programme that will be expanded to grassroots communities through market and town hall engagements. Social Mobilisation Specialist, Newton Otsemaye, also stressed the need to address voter apathy among young Nigerians through sustained civic awareness campaigns.
Co-Convener of the Movement for the Transformation of Nigeria (MOTION), Comrade Chris Isiguzo, urged Nigerians to play a more active role in governance by exercising their civic responsibilities.
Participants at the event commended the organisers, saying they learned about the programme through social media. ActionAid Nigeria’s Digital Communication Officer, Zack Onwe, emphasised the importance of leveraging digital platforms to further improve youth participation in future elections.
The Democracy Fiesta attracted a large turnout of young people and featured comedy performances, entertainment and other recreational activities alongside voter registration services.
