The Kingdom of the Netherlands has donated specialised equipment to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to strengthen its Hostmanship Unit and support ongoing reforms in migration management and public service delivery.
The equipment was presented by the Repatriation and Departure Service of the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security during a ceremony at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja.
Receiving the equipment, Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, described the donation as another important step in the more than two decades of cooperation between Nigeria Immigration and the Netherlands.
Nandap said the equipment would strengthen the training capacity and operational effectiveness of the Hostmanship Unit while helping the Service improve professionalism and customer experience.
According to her, the Hostmanship initiative seeks to ensure that immigration officers treat members of the public with respect, courtesy, empathy and professionalism at every point of interaction.
She said the additional equipment would support efforts to make the philosophy an integral part of the operations of the Immigration Service, ensuring that people who interact with its personnel feel welcomed and valued.
He reaffirmed the Netherlands’ commitment to supporting programmes that improve migration management, strengthen institutional capacity and enhance public service delivery in Nigeria.
The NIS said cooperation between both countries has already resulted in the training of hundreds of immigration officers, the establishment of a dedicated Hostmanship Unit and continued capacity-building under the European Union-funded Capacity Building and Relationship Management Project.
The Service said the latest intervention demonstrates the commitment of Nigeria and the Netherlands to improving migration governance through knowledge sharing, innovation and institutional reforms.
It also expressed appreciation to the Dutch government and its Repatriation and Departure Service, assuring that the equipment would be effectively deployed to support ongoing reforms.
The Nigeria Immigration Service has intensified efforts in recent years to modernise border management, improve its services and strengthen the professionalism of its personnel.
The Hostmanship programme forms part of those reforms. The customer service approach, which originated in Sweden, promotes positive interactions by encouraging officials to treat people with courtesy, empathy and respect.
The Netherlands has remained an important partner in Nigeria’s migration governance efforts, supporting capacity-building programmes through bilateral cooperation and European Union-funded initiatives.
The partnership has focused on strengthening migration management, addressing irregular migration, developing institutional capacity and promoting international standards in service delivery.
The latest donation is expected to further support the NIS as it works towards a more efficient, professional and people-focused immigration system.
