The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to announce another salary increase for personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Musa made the disclosure in Abuja during a one-day training and financial empowerment workshop organised for widows and wives of military personnel.
He said the proposed salary review is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the welfare of troops and recognise the sacrifices of military personnel serving the country.
The Defence Minister recalled that the pay for soldiers increased from ₦49,000 to ₦100,000 following efforts made during his tenure as Chief of Defence Staff. He said discussions are ongoing to secure another improvement in military salaries.
Musa expressed confidence that President Tinubu would soon make an announcement on the new salary increase.
Speaking on the workshop themed “Renewed Hope for Families of the Armed Forces of Nigeria Through Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development,” Musa stressed that an effective military depends not only on equipment and well-trained personnel but also on the economic stability of their families.
He commended the wives of service personnel for supporting their spouses and contributing to troop morale, particularly those serving on the frontlines.
The minister also paid tribute to widows of fallen military personnel, praising their resilience and perseverance after losing their husbands in service to the country.
The programme was organised by the Federal Ministry of Defence in partnership with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria, SMEDAN.
SMEDAN Director-General, Charles Odii, disclosed that ₦25 million was disbursed to 500 widows and wives of soldiers serving on the frontlines to support their businesses and entrepreneurial activities.
Odii said the initiative would be extended across the country to equip beneficiaries with financial knowledge and entrepreneurial skills while promoting greater financial inclusion.
The event was attended by the wife of the Defence Minister, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Richard Pheelangwa, officials of the ministry, SMEDAN representatives, development partners and other stakeholders.
