US President Donald Trump has imposed 50 per cent tariffs on nearly 20 billion dollars worth of Canadian imports, accusing Canada of discriminating against American made cars, alcohol and dairy products.
The new tariffs, which take effect in 30 days, apply to a broad range of products including wine, cement, ice hockey equipment, dairy products, swimming pools, furniture, fishing rods, seeds, clothing and wigs.
Trump invoked Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, a law that allows the US President to impose punitive tariffs of up to 50 per cent on countries deemed to have discriminated against American goods. It is the first known use of the law in almost a century.
According to the Office of the US Trade Representative, the tariffs cover nearly 20 billion dollars in Canadian imports, representing about 5.2 per cent of the 382 billion dollars worth of goods imported from Canada in 2025.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the measures were necessary because Canada had continued to retaliate against the United States despite ongoing efforts to secure what the administration described as fair and reciprocal trade agreements.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his government had presented comprehensive proposals to resolve the dispute, maintaining that previous US tariffs violated the North American trade agreement.
Carney said Canada remains ready to engage with the United States to resolve outstanding issues for the mutual benefit of both countries.
The latest tariffs come amid continued trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa, with the Trump administration also criticising Canada over retaliatory trade measures and excluding it from ongoing discussions with Mexico on proposed changes to the US Mexico Canada Agreement.
President Trump and Prime Minister Carney met during the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey, where Trump also urged Canada to address wildfire smoke drifting into parts of the United States and warned that the cost of dealing with the pollution could be added to existing tariffs on Canadian goods.
